Sirumalai has an ambience spirit of air; the aroma of coffee plantation and the aura of silver oak trees resonate with a message, “Nurture the nature of being for better future living”. The Sisters of Jesus Mary Joseph has explored the area with the assistance of Rev. Fr. John Kalathil SJ, AP who has invited them to Sirumalai, Tamil Nadu. He realized that the people of Sirumalai needed basic Health Care Facilities and High School Education because the children from 8th standard onwards had to go to Dindigul for their high school studies. After discernment process, the authorities decided to have a Dispensary and Retreat Centre in this locality. On 18th October 1996 three JMJ sisters came to Sirumalai PRK Estate stayed in the Bungalow and started the construction of the JMJ Convent in the present site.
On 17th November 1996 the foundation stone for the JMJ Convent was blessed by Rt. Rev. MGR. M. Arokiasamy, Arch of Bishop of Madurai Diocese, in the presence of Provincial Superior Rev. Sr. Pauline Joseph. The Convent at Sirumalai is named after “Holy Family of Nazareth” because to imitate the hidden life and the virtues of our holy patrons of Jesus Mary Joseph with an ever adaptable apostolic availability and to partake in the mystery of salvation to build the kingdom of God.

In 1999 the retreat centre was inaugurated on 4th January by Rev. Sr. Benedict. M.J. Melchers, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus Mary Joseph. We sincerely appreciate and thank the Superiors for all the facilities given to initiate the pioneering work in Sirumalai. Much progress has taken place in health care ministry; many people came and experienced the healing touch of God morally and spiritually than physically. The priests and religious sisters came from different Congregations to the retreat centre to encounter God in silence and solitude. We also visit the nearby families in the evening and read the Bible and pray with them. So our ministries in this area are very fruitful and relevant according to the signs of the times.
